2024年1月14日(日) Hokkaido Seafood Buffet 様にて、恒例の新年会を開催しました。今年は100名を超える皆様にお集まりいただき、ビュッフェスタイルのお食事を楽しみながら、わいわいと大いに盛り上がりました。

プログラムは、日本協会会長の挨拶・ご協賛企業のご紹介・ピッツバーグ日系団体の方々からのご挨拶（ピッツバーグさくらプロジェクト、日本教室）・活動中の同好会のご紹介（アロマを楽しむ会、鉄道ジオラマ同好会）など。一芸披露コーナーでは7歳のはるまくんが特技のルービックキューブを披露！その早業に拍手喝采でした。

年の始めの運試しとして、ラッフルと福引も実施しました。今回も有難いことに沢山の団体・個人の皆様から魅力的な景品を数多くご協賛いただきました。レストラン等のギフトカードやペンギンスのチケット、航空割引券、素晴らしいワインや日本酒、日本の写真や食品、そしてCD等々。お子様にはポケモングッズが大人気！それぞれ当選された方にとても喜んでいただきました。

また、今年は元旦に発生した能登半島地震への義援金箱も設置させていただきました。参加者の皆様から$480の義援金が集まり、ニューヨーク総領事館を通じて全額を被災地にお送りしたことをここにご報告いたします。

最後には全員で『花は咲く』を合唱しました。2011年の東日本大震災の復興支援のために作られたチャリティーソングで、能登半島地震をはじめとする被災地に想いを想いを馳せながら歌いました。

実施後のアンケートでは「とても楽しく和気あいあいな会でよかった」「久しぶりの方とあえて嬉しかった」「素晴らしいサービス、多様で美味しい食べ物だった！」「会場へのアクセスが良かった」「景品も充実していた」「家族で参加できるいい会だった」「ビュッフェだったので子どもも料理を楽しめた」「準備が行き届いていた」「手作りの運営の温かさを感じた」「来年も楽しみにしています！」と有難いご意見を頂戴しました。一方で「もう少し他の参加者と交流できる仕組みがほしい（席を移動した歓談など）」「空き時間にゲームなどエンタメを取り入れてはどうか」「（日本語だけでなく）英語のアナウンスを取り入れてはどうか」「会場が遠いのでランチだと助かる」「司会の声が聞こえづらかった」といったご意見もあり、ぜひ今後の企画に反映させたいと思います。

The annual New Year’s party was held at Hokkaido Seafood Buffet on Sunday, January 14, 2024. This year, over 100 people gathered and enjoyed a buffet-style meal and a lively atmosphere.

The program included greetings from the president of JAGP, introductions of sponsors, greetings from Japanese organizations in Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh Sakura Project, Japanese Nationality Room), and introductions of clubs that are currently active (Aroma, Railroad Diorama). In the “Short Performance” corner, 7-year-old Haruma Kamura showed off his special skill, Rubik’s Cube! His quick skills were applauded by the audience.

We also held a raffle and a lucky draw. We were grateful for the many attractive prizes donated by many organizations and individuals. We received gift cards to restaurants etc, discount airline tickets, tickets to the Penguins game, great wine and sake, Japanese photos, food, CDs, and more! Pokemon goods were very popular with the children. Everyone who won a prize was very happy.

This year, we also set up a donation box for the Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred on New Year’s Day. We are pleased to report that $480 was collected from the participants and all the money was sent to the affected areas through the consulate.

At the end of the event, everyone sang “Hana ha Saku” together, a charity song written to support the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, while thinking about the Noto Peninsula earthquake and other disaster areas.

In the questionnaire after the event, the following comments were made: “It was a very enjoyable and friendly party,” “I am glad that Corona is over and I have more opportunities to see you all,” “Great service, diverse and delicious food,” “Good access to the venue,” “Great prizes,” “Good party for the whole family,”” The buffet allowed children to enjoy the food,” “It was well prepared,” “I felt the warmth of the handmade management,” and “I look forward to next year’s event!
On the other hand, there were also comments such as “I would like to have more opportunities to interact with other participants,” “How about adding entertainment such as games during free time,” “How about announcements in English (in addition to Japanese),” “Lunch would be helpful because the venue is far,” “It was difficult to hear the MC’s voice,”. We would like to reflect these comments in our future plans.

今年も秋の交流イベントとして『パイレーツの試合観戦』を実施、計3回で60名を超える皆さんが参加してくださいました。

地元パイレーツが大勝した試合も逆転負けした試合もありましたが、相手チームの日本人選手の活躍を見守ったり、スタジアムのフードやビールを堪能したり、参加者同士で交流したりと、様々に楽しんでいただけたかと思います。
家族連れからご夫婦、学生、ピッツバーグに来られたばかりの方もピッツバーグ歴の長い方も、幅広い方々が参加され、貴重な交流の機会となりました。

参加者された皆様からも「楽しく観戦、交流ができました」「年に一度の試合観戦ではありますが、皆さんと一緒と思うだけで心強かったです」「子供達も両親も楽しめたみたいで良かったです！」「ぜひ恒例のイベントにしてください」など、感想をいただきました。ご参加、ありがとうございました！今後も皆様に喜んでいただけるイベントを企画してまいりたいと思います。来年1月には新年会を予定しておりますので、ぜひお楽しみに！

2023年4月22日(土)、ピッツバーグ日本語補習授業校様と合同で「ピッツバーグ日本コミュニティ 春のピクニック」を開催しました。あいにくの天候にもかかわらず、200名を超える皆さんにご参加いただき、楽しい交流のひとときとなりました。

会場はNorth ParkのLatrobeシェルター周辺、ピッツバーグさくらプロジェクトの皆さんが桜を植樹・管理されているエリアです。新緑の美しい葉桜から花の盛りの桜まで、多様な春の景色が広がっていました。

メインプログラムは杵と臼を使った餅つきでした。小さいお子様から大人まで、ぺったんぺったんと餅をついて大いに盛り上がりました。参加者の皆さんには、つきたてのあたたかくて柔らかいお餅がふるまわれました。

その後はピッツバーグの尺八奏者  Devon Osamu Tipp さんによるミニコンサートも行われ、風流な調べが公園に響きました。

お楽しみとして、日本でおなじみのガラガラ回す福引も実施しました。軽食もご提供し、スナックをつまみながらお話に花を咲かせました。

補習校の皆様との合同企画という初めての試みでしたが、想定を超える沢山の方々にご参加いただくことができました。ピッツバーグ近郊の日本コミュニティを中心に、新たな出会いや交流の場をご提供できたのではと思います。

今回のイベントは、沢山のボランティアの皆様のご協力によって開催することができました。また、会社の臼と杵をご提供いただいたほか、多くの社員の方々もボランティアとして参加くださったMitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc.様、福引の豪華景品をご提供くださったAmnet New York Inc.様、さくらMAPをご提供くださったピッツバーグさくらプロジェクト様、イベントを支えてくださった皆様、そしてご参加くださった皆様にこの場を借りてお礼申し上げます。ありがとうございました。

Pittsburgh Japanese Community Spring Picnic was held

On Saturday, April 22, 2023, Pittsburgh Japan Community Spring Picnic was held together with Pittsburgh Japanese School. Despite the unfavorable weather, more than 200 people attended the event.

The event was held at the Latrobe Shelter in North Park, an area where cherry trees are planted and maintained by Pittsburgh Sakura Project. The area was filled with a variety of spring scenery, from beautiful leafy cherry trees with fresh green foliage to cherry trees in full bloom.

The main program was Mochitsuki(rice cake pounding) using a pestle and mortar. Everyone from small children to adults had a great time pounding mochi(rice cakes). Participants were served freshly pounded warm and soft rice cakes.

Afterwards, shakuhachi player Devon Osamu Tipp performed a mini-concert, and the park was filled with his elegant music.

In addition, fukubishi(a Japanese-style “rattling lucky draw”) was held as a fun event. Snacks were also served, and the guests enjoyed chatting over snacks.

This was our first attempt at a joint event with Pittsburgh Japanese school, and we were pleased to have more participants than we had expected. We hope that we were able to provide a place for new encounters and exchanges.

We were able to hold this event with the help of many volunteers. Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. provided the company’s mortar and pestle and many of their employees volunteered their time to participate in the event. Amnet New York Inc. provided the great prizes for the lucky draw. Pittsburgh Sakura Project provided the Sakura MAP.

We express our sincere thanks to everyone who supported the event and to all the participants. Thank you very much.

Pittsburgh Japan Community Spring Picnic

Pittsburgh Japan Community Spring Picnic will be held on Saturday, April 22 at North Park. Come enjoy eating freshly pounded rice cakes and listening to the  Japanese musical instruments in a park with a view of cherry blossoms.

Pittsburgh Japanese School (PJS) and Japan Association of Greater Pittsburgh (JAGP) have jointly organized this event to provide an opportunity for the Japanese community in the Pittsburgh area to get to know each other.

Everyone is welcome to attend free of charge, so please feel free to register.

2023年1月15日(日)、COVID-19流行以降、実に3年ぶりにインパーソンの新年会を開催しました。会場は、ピッツバーグの日本人に長く親しまれ、今年40周年を迎えられたKiku Japanese Restaurant 様です。90名近くの皆様にお集まりいただき、美味しいお食事をいただきながら話に花を咲かせ、大いに盛り上がりました。

日本協会会長の挨拶に始まり、ご協賛企業のご紹介、ピッツバーグ日系団体の方々からのご挨拶（桜プロジェクト、日本語補習授業校、日本教室）のほか、歌や尺八のパフォーマンスもありました。

一番の盛り上がりを見せたのは、恒例のラッフルと福引です。今年も多くのご協賛をいただき、ペンギンズチケット、アメリカ国内航空券、ピッツバーグのレストランやお店のギフトカードなど、数多くの豪華景品をご準備することができました。くじをひいて当選番号が読み上げられるたびに、歓声や落胆の声が上がりました。

久しぶりの開催でしたが、参加者の皆さんからは「とても楽しかった」「これまで参加した新年会のなかでも最高だった」「知らない方ともお話ができて良かった」「お食事がとても美味しかった」「お正月らしいプログラムがあって良かった」「また来年も参加したい！」といったお声を頂戴いたしました。一方で「もう少し他の参加者と交流できる仕組みがほしい」「司会の声が聞こえづらかった」などのご意見もあり、ぜひ来年度の企画に反映させたいと思います。

On Sunday, January 15, 2023, we held our first impersonal New Year’s party in three years since the COVID-19 epidemic. The venue was Kiku Japanese Restaurant, a longtime favorite of Japanese people in Pittsburgh, which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. Nearly 90 people gathered for a delicious meal and lively conversation.

The event started with a speech by the President of our Association, followed by introductions of sponsors, greetings from Pittsburgh Japanese organizations (Sakura Project, Pittsburgh Japanese School, Japanese Nationality Room), and performances of songs and shakuhachi (bamboo flute).

The most exciting part was the raffle and lucky draw. Thanks to the generous sponsors, we were able to offer many great prizes this year, including Penguins tickets, U.S. domestic airline tickets, gift cards to Pittsburgh restaurants and stores, and much more. Every time the winning numbers were read out after the raffle, there were cheers and disappointed shouts.

After the party, we received comments from participants such as “It was a lot of fun,” “It was the best New Year’s party I have ever attended,” “It was nice to talk with people I don’t know,” “The food was very delicious,” “It was nice to have a New Year’s program,” and “I want to attend again next year!”. On the other hand, we received some comments such as “I would like to have more opportunities to interact with other participants,” and “It was difficult to hear the MC’s voice,” which we will reflect in next year’s plan.

＜その他＞

• 定員がオーバーした場合、ウェイティングリストを作成し、キャンセルで席が空き次第、順次繰り上げて参加いただけるようにする予定です。詳細は、該当の方に別途お知らせいたします。
• やむを得ず申込をキャンセルされる場合は、1週間前 1/8(日)までに事務局 までお知らせください。それ以降のキャンセルは返金致しかねます。
• 福引の景品（新品・未開封の物）をご出展頂ける方がいらっしゃいましたら、事務局までお知らせいただき、当日お持ちください。
• 定員オーバーで参加できない会員の方は、Zoomで福引やラッフルに参加いただけるよう検討中です。詳細は該当の方にお知らせいたします。

New Year’s Party for 2023

JAGP will hold its first in-person New Year’s party in three years on January 15, 2023. The venue will be Kiku Japanese Restaurant, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year. We are planning a fun-filled party with the usual raffle and lottery, so please come and join us.

Advance registration is required (first-come-first-served basis). The deadline is Sunday, January 8, but we will close applications as soon as the maximum number of seats are filled. Please note that the number of seats is limited, so please register as soon as possible to avoid the possibility of oversubscription. We look forward to your registration!

<Others>

• In the event that we are over capacity, we will create a waiting list, and as soon as seats become available due to cancellations, we will move up the waiting list in order of availability.
• If you must cancel your application, please notify the secretariat by 1/8 (Sun.) one week prior to the date of the event. No refunds will be made for cancellations made after that date.
• If you would like to donate a prize (new and unopened) for the lottery, please let us know and bring it with you on the day of the event.
• For those members who are unable to attend due to oversubscription , we are considering the possibility of having them participate in the lottery and raffle via Zoom. Details will be provided to the appropriate person.
